My eldest daughter loves Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch. Not only it is an amazing racing game, it is also one of the more accessible ones, IMHO edging out the likes of Forza Horizon 5 by virtue of having both auto-drive and auto-steer. Being blind, the controls allow her to participate in races, and either her sister or myself provide rally-style instruction on turns and obstacles, or let her know what power-ups that she have. Weekends are usually when the two of them basically mine for coins in the game to unlock new car parts.
So this Christmas, I decided to get her a physical approximation of a Mario Kart track in the form of a Hot Wheels Mario Kart Circuit Lite Set, which despite the “Lite” word in its name, is actually quite large and the entire set has been occupying a part of the living room.
The track comes with a pair of slam launch controllers which you’ll need to slam on to launch Mario (who comes with the set) and another kart (Wario, which I purchased separately) around a track which includes double loops, banked turns, spinning coins and finish line. The kids have been slamming on the launch controllers ever since Christmas Day, and I must say the controllers are holding up pretty well.
What’s interesting though is that there’s not really that many different Hot Wheel Mario Kart tracks on sale over here in Malaysia and aside from the Lite Set, the other more advance sets such as the Track Set are available as parallel imports while the Bowser Castle set is nowhere to be seen.
