Two of the movies that introduced ultra-violence and satire to me as a kid had several things in commons, both were sci-fi movies, and both share the same director, the Dutch filmmaker, Paul Verhoeven. The first one, RoboCop, was a 1980s take on Jesus with a twist. Set in a dystopian future Detroit, police officer Alex Murphy gets shot to death, only to be resurrected as a cyborg cop with only his strong sense of duty holding him together while he seeks to avenge his death.

The second film is an adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s military sci-fi novel, Starship Troopers. Initially panned by critics who couldn’t gel satire together with science-fiction, the movie is now rated as one of the best sci-fi movies out there. In Starship Troopers, Johnny Rico signs up for military service to fight the extraterrestrial bug threat, taking the fight to them in space together with his squad of mobile infantrymen. This movie spawned Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles, which is a perennial underrated CGI animated series (do look out for it).

There another thing that ties both films. Their respective franchises have received new video game additions in the past couple of years! It started with Starship Troopers: Terran Command, released for the PC last year (2022). Terran Command is a real-time strategy title, with a focus on squad-based combat, much like the later Waharmmer startegy games.

The game’s pretty fun and I’m in the midst of checking it out at the moment. A playthrough video of 2 of the game’s mission is up now on my Youtube channel.

RoboCop: Rogue City on the other hand is slated to be released this November 202, and it is set between the RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3 movies. A first-person shooter, players get to play as RoboCop and from the gameplay videos that I’ve been watching, deliver justice on par with that of the movies. A demo is out for the game at the moment, so be sure to check it out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1681430/RoboCop_Rogue_City/

I will be checking out the game soon, so look out for the playthrough on my channel.
