So, did your favourite game of 2021 win anything at The Game Awards 2021 that took place earlier today at the Microsoft Theatre earlier today. I managed to catch the tail end of it (due to work) and saw several trailers (including for The Matrix Resurrections, ARC Raiders, Elden Ring) as well as the announcement for Game of the Year (It Takes Two). I was hoping for Sable to claim the title for Best Indie Game, but it wasn’t so, as it lost out to Kena: Bridge of Spirits.
The TGAs were also an opportunity for companies to announce upcoming titles, and there were a number that caught my eye. Here are my top three.
Relic’s Warhammer 40K: Space Marine gets its long-awaited sequel in the form of Space Marine 2 and its world premiere at the TGAs. The third-person shooter is being developed by Saber Interactive and sees the iconic Captain Titus engage the relentless Tyranid hordes. The game is set to be released on the Sony PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and the PC.
The developers behind Northgard, Shiro Games, is bringing back the Dune franchise to real-time strategy games in the form of Dune: Spice Wars. Players get to take charge of the most prominent factions in the Dune franchise and vie for control of the planet Arrakis and the coveted Spice, by means of warfare, spying, politics or economic hegemony. The game is slated for Early Access on Steam.
Lastly, Quantic Dream’s upcoming Star Wars Eclipse is still early in development but boasts a cinematic trailer not unlike any modern Star Wars title. Set in the High Republic era, the game is dubbed as an action-adventure title. I’ve not played Heavy Rain before, so I’m not too sure what to expect, but the game is indeed eye catching.
