It has been a busy start to 2021, and being busy is good considering the pandemic and the economy these days. I’ve managed to sell off my PS4 to make some space, and Nineoverten’s current lineup ushering in the new year consists of a Sony PS5, a Nintendo Switch, a Ryzen 3-based gaming PC and an iPhone 11 Pro. This is also the first time ever I’ve owned current and next-gen consoles and a gaming PC simultaneously. You have the pandemic to blame for that amount of gaming firepower.
Speaking of gaming-firsts, back in the 90s, there was this popular annual beach festival at my hometown, and on one particular year, a PC vendor set up a booth on the festival site. This was the first time I’ve encountered a PC running a game, and it was LucasArt’s Star Wars: X-Wing. We didn’t get a PC there and then, and neither did we get that particular game 2 years later (when we did get a PC). Nevertheless X-Wing did leave quite an impression with the festival going crowd.
Since getting the PS5, I thought it would be nice to check out EA’s Star Wars: Squadrons. It was a decision made more palatable by the discounted price on the PlayStation Store considering that the game has yet to see 4K support on the PS5. 4K support for Squadrons is currently limited to the Xbox Series X|S.
Gameplay-wise, it has been a claustrophobic, confusing experience in either a TIE Fighter or the X-Wing. I’ve only completed the pair of prologue missions, and honestly, I would prefer a 3rd-person view while piloting a starfighter. However, I understand that the game doesn’t have that in order to prevent a competitive advantage. After all, Squadrons IS marketed as a multiplayer game.
