Green Lantern: Earth One is a re-imagining of the Green Lantern story featuring series stalwart Hal Jordan. Volume One was released in 2018, and it was rather interesting. In this iteration of the emerald hero, Hal Jordan is a jaded astronaut (or should I say off-world mining jock) who finds an ancient extraterrestrial craft on an asteroid with a dead Green Lantern; cue the fight against Manhunters by an impoverished Green Lantern Corps.

Volume Two was just recently released, and it deals with the power vacuum introduced by the demise of the Manhunters, which brings about the return of the culprit (it’s a Guardian in fact) behind the fall of the GL Corps, and he has a new Yellow Lantern Corps at his beck and call.

In one particular page, Malaysia gets a shout out. It’s not the first time Malaysia has gotten a shout out in popular culture, and one of the more recent ones that I can recall would be the Terran Emperor Phillipa Georgiou (played by Michelle Yeoh) taking on the role of the deceased Federation Captain Georgiou, and mentioning that she’s from Langkawi, an island in Malaysia.

Back to Green Lantern, in the aftermath of a mysterious explosion during an alien envoy’s visit to Earth, guess what was used to discover the root cause of said explosion? An abandoned satellite from the defunct Malaysian Space Agency.

Kanta stands for Lens 🙂

From a story point of view, Volume 2 does turns some heads with its portrayal of Yellow Lanterns, which in this case are Qwardians (from another dimension) with souped-up rings, acting out of the interest of imposing order (rather than fear). The art, by Gabriel Hardman (who co-authors the book with Corinna Beckho) is just amazing, and this combine with the story makes Green Lantern: Earth One Vol. 2 a worthy addition to any comic book reader’s collection.
