I was fortunate enough to receive a Nintendo Switch for Christmas, from my wife. It’s one of those updated Nintendo Switch (released this year) with much longer battery life compared to the original model released back in 2017. If you’ve gotten a Switch this Christmas and would like to check whether you’ve gotten the right model (well, the older model isn’t wrong, just that the battery life is poorer by a fair bit), check out the serial number (it should start with XKW, the older one start with XAW).

Neon Christmas

Mine came in a rather fetching Nyko Thin Case which while translucent, the case had a two-tone shade going on which complemented the Neon Nintendo Switch very well. You can see it for yourself in the picture above. Said case is available here if you are interested.

Naturally video game consoles are usually sold as bundles during the Christmas season and this came not only with the thin case, a carrying case (very convenient with a Super Mario Odyssey theme, you can check it out here) and also a game, in this case New Super Mario Bros.U Deluxe.

I had my fair share of game time on the title, but the interesting part of the Switch is the additional firepower it has (as a hybrid console) over lets say a Nintendo 3DS, which means more ports from other consoles including examples such as Overwatch and Diablo III! This is one of the things that I want to try out on the Switch, Triple-A gaming while on the go.

I bought a copy of Overwatch on the Nintendo eShop which came with a 3-month free subscription for Nintendo Switch Online. One thing let to another and I ended up with a copy of Tetris 99 which is free with the Switch Online Subscription.

Now, Tetris 99 is really something different than any other game that I’ve played before. I love Tetris, being playing the game since primary school, but playing Tetris while being engaged in Battle Royale with 98 other players? It’s crazy fun. Basically clearing lines sends garbage lines to other players within the same session (and not only that, you get to target which other player you are sending garbage to). Causing other players to “K.O” multiplies the garbage lines you send by a certain percentage. It’s crazy, it’s frantic (imagine being targeted by not one but 10 players) and one of the best puzzlers you can get on the Switch.

Tetris 99 requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription for online play. That’s similar to how Sony requires a Playstation Plus subscription on the PS4 for online play. The good news is that the physical copy of Tetris 99 comes with a 12-month subscription code for NSO, so check it out over here and let me know what you think about the game.
