Apple’s Game Center made it easy to pit individual players against the world but what’s missing is the ability to form or join teams (or clans for that matter). Mountain View, California-based company TeamPlay is set to change all that with the introduction of the TeamPlay SDK, a cloud-based solution that when integrated into games will allow players to join teams (or create their own) and battle other teams in which they have real rivalries. Each time a player scores, earn points, reach achievements, etc, they’ll know that the team will be benefiting.

For game developers, the TeamPlay SDK is simple to integrate, either running standalone or as a complement to Apple’s Game Center. With the framework added, developers can drop players into a team picker, record their scores, provide player standings, league tables and other team-related stats. The framework generates a real-time news feed whenever the game is played, keeping everyone up to date on how their teams are faring.

I find the whole idea of TeamPlay’s SDK to be an intriguing one, since team multiplayer and clans are not really an iOS mainstay. Will this pave the way for more WoW-like games or clans that were so prevalent during the Quake III Arena/Unreal Tournament era? But how will this new company scale if demand hits the roof? In any case, the guys at TeamPlay are doing an “Indie Summer” Launch Promo, whereby they are giving away the “indie” upgrade version to any developer who integrates TeamPlay into their title by Thanksgiving (November 22nd 2012).
