Here’s an interesting bit of news (remember you read it here first on Nine Over Ten 9/10), H.P Lovecraft’s work, Call of Cthulhu, is coming to mobile phones near you as a turn-based strategy/RPG game. I’m not really sure whether will they be using the same generic graphics engine across the board but this should be very interesting:
An agreement between Call of Cthulhu impresarios, Chaosium and new development studio Red Wasp Design will see the award winning role-playing game (RPG), Call of Cthulhu, coming to a mobile platform near you. The first title, ‘Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land‘ is set in the midst of World War One and pits a team of investigators and soldiers against an ancient enemy, older than humanity itself.
This eldritch enemy is using the carnage of the great war to build an undead army amidst the battlefields of Europe. The game will be a 3D turn-based strategy/role playing game and will initially launch on iPhone and Android with more platforms to follow. As the game is still in development, release dates and price points are to be announced after the summer.
Call of Cthulhu was originally the title of a novella by cult horror writer H.P. Lovecraft which has, since it was published in 1928, captured the imagination of generation after generation of fans. His works also inspired a best selling role-playing game, Call of Cthulhu, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2011.
Over the years, as well as gathering many dedicated players, it has won numerous awards, from the Game Designer’s Guild Select Award in 1981 to being voted as the number 1 Gothic/Horror RPG by readers of GamingReport.com in 2003. Chaosium’s Dustin Wright said of the project, “Chaosium is very excited to be working with the Red Wasp Design team to bring Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land to fruition. We look forward to playing it.”
Newcomers Red Wasp Design, is founded by game industry experienced developers who have previously worked on huge hits such as Conflict: Desert Storm, Buzz! franchise and the acclaimed Playstation Network hit Savage Moon. Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land will be their first title, and is a self-funded project by the indie studio.
Red Wasp’s Tomas Rawlings said, “I’ve been a huge fan of Lovecraft since I was about 10 years old when I discovered his writing and the RPG his work had inspired. Lovecraft’s nightmare vision of a handful of doomed humans battling the minions of slumbering titanic entities really had me hooked from the start. I’ve wanted to do a video game inspired by his work and the RPG for a long time.”
Red Wasp Design will be blogging weekly about the progress of the game which you can follow on Facebook (https://on.fb.me/redwaspfb), Twitter (@redwaspdesign) and on their site at: https://www.redwaspdesign.com
