As an iOS video game developer, I’m no stranger to receiving review request for beta copies of games. Usually what happens is that I’ll need to send in my devices’ UDIDs to the developer in order for them to give me a custom build of the game. But last night, I found out something cool after receiving a request to review Crawl Space Games’ latest game: Float.
They are using a new service provided by TestFlight which allows for…wait for it…over-the-air beta distribution of apps! For developers, it’s simple as putting up the IPA, e-mail the recipients, and watch as the recipients get the apps (there’s a real time counter).
For beta testers like myself, I just need to register myself on the site, open the subsequent e-mail on my iOS device and hit the link to register my device and to install a shortcut to the site on my home screen. Subsequently I just need to browse the site through the shortcut and download whatever apps that have been assigned to me along with the provisioning profiles.
The service is currently in beta and free at the moment. I must say, it’s pretty damn cool and it’s a boon to iOS developers. Check out their blog for the latest news and updates: https://blog.testflightapp.com/, or visit the site directly: https://testflightapp.com/
