This is a pretty interesting genre, the puzzle platformer. I’ve encountered several on the iPhone in the past year and they were always memorable. V-particle for its amazing particle effects and crafty levels, and Gravbot for its gravity defying gameplay. So how does Honeyslug’s Kahoots for the iPhone and iPod touch feature with this bunch of luminaries? Pretty well I would say.

For starters, the game has character. The game takes the theme, one that reminds me of homemade toys, and runs riot with it. The Pegbeast sings, rhymes in a distinct voice in between levels, announcing achievements and new gameplay elements.  The levels on the other hand feature an element of difficulty which ramps up nicely. Levels are crafted so well it’s fitting to say that puzzle platformers like Kahoots are the brain teasers for the mobile/smartphone generation.

I had plenty of trouble at first guiding one Kahoot through a level to the Exit Door. I had to slide around special blocks to help the Kahoot get around obstacles, no mean feat as you have no direct control over the Kahoot and definitely need to move fast. One aspect of the game that probably needs improvement are the controls, they feel a little rusty.

Kahoots is a very good effort from Honeyslug, and definitely a worthy addition to the library of any fan of puzzle platformers. Nine Over Ten 9/10 rates Kahoots at 4 over 5 STARS. RECOMMENDED.

The game is available on the App Store for USD 0.99. Check it out over here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kahoots/id380300088?mt=8
