I was at an event last week when I was introduced as someone who writes about iPhone games. Let’s just say that the person I was introduced to didn’t seem to be taking me seriously and jokingly asked where did I get my games from, whether that I pirated them, buy them outright or receive promo codes and then proceeded to mouth off on whether I’ve played this or that game.
In any case, the question on where do I get my games is probably one of the more frequent questions I get, it’s just the first time I met one person who asked in such an insinuatingย or snarky manner. I don’t pirate iPhone games that’s for sure, I may have started with a jailbroken iPhone 2G, but now I’m a proud owner of a brand new 3GS which is not jailbroken. Most of the time I get my games via promo codes; Nine Over Ten 9/10 is pretty popular with indie devs and they do pass me stuff like press releases, screen caps, videos and also promo codes for their games.
Since the iPhone is a hotbed of indie activity, that translates to plenty of games to keep me occupied and I really like their work. Writing about iPhone games has also attracted attention from bigger studios and certain video games PR firms. This is where I get promo codes for games from larger studios, and this includes Disney and Freeverse. I’m reviewing Split Second at the moment, thanks to the nice folks at Disney.
When it comes to buying games, I’m more of a prudent shopper. I can afford to wait for promotions and I keep tabs on AppJmp and FreeAppaDay on Twitter to get news on which app is undergoing a sale or is on a free download promo. Normally the window of opportunity is small (since the promos tend to last for a day, some even for a couple of hours) but the reward for being vigilant is getting free games! By the way, Hero of Sparta is now going for free for TWO hours only, so hurry!
So there you have it on how Nine Over Ten 9/10 gets its games and most importantly, I do my reviews…for FREE.
